Adam and Eve
Wow. I cannot say enough good things about Eve and the bravery and strength it took to do what she did. In most Christian faiths, it is believed that what she did was a serious sin and damned humanity. Our faith is one of the few that saw this as something that was necessary for our eternal progression. Just think, if Eve had not partaken of the fruit, literally none of us would be here. She had the choice to stay in the Garden forever, as an immortal, with Adam, but never have kids. She chose the latter. She did not want to remain in a state of equilibrium and never experience what joy and true love felt like. Of course, she knew that you would have to experience pain and sadness to feel and appreciate the good, but she was willing to face that. And Adam, he didn't have to take the fruit with Eve, but because God gave them a commandment to multiply and replenish the earth, he knew this was something he had to do, and he was willing to follow Eve. Heavenly Father gave them basically contradictory commandments: don't eat the fruit, but by doing this you can't have children, but oh, you are supposed to have kids. He knew what choice they would make, and He WANTED them to make that choice. That choice is the reason why we ALL have the opportunity to stand in the presence of God again.
Adam and Eve were equal in their "helpmeet" or their marriage. Eve was not an afterthought of the creation of Adam. She was not put there for his pleasure. Eve was created in the image of a divine woman. "A woman's body is no curse, but rather the fullest material expression of her divine potential." She was not made to be inferior to Adam, they were created to be equal. Equal, but different. One of my favorite quotes about Eve goes like this, "Eve was no airhead, no evildoer; no, Eve perhaps was the most courageous and wise of all God's daughters." Elder Oaks said this in 1993.
God approved of Eve's choice. Because of her decision, they were able to have children and bring all members of our world back to the presence of God, if we are worthy of it.
The story and creation of Adam and Eve is the origin of God intending man and woman being created to be equal, but we also need to keep in mind that while we are meant to be equal, we both have different divine roles and responsibilities, and should be willing and prepared to fulfull these responsibilities to the best of our abilities.
