A Lasting Marriage

President Spencer W. Kimball said, "While marriage is difficult, and discordant and frustrated marriages are common, yet real, lasting happiness is possible, and marriage can be more an exultant ecstasy than the human mind can conceive. This is within the reach of every couple, every person." I love how real he makes marriage out to be. Marriage isn't always this perfect relationship where you never argue with your spouse, get frustrated with them, and feel happy ALL THE TIME. This is part of any normal relationship. But how you react to those hard times will tell how happy and healthy a relationship you have. Each person is capable of having a relationship like this, if we work hard at it. Marriage is work, and if it means that much to us, we should be willing and ready to do what it takes to make it something worthwhile.
Couples have obligations to one another. A man and a woman each of their role in the eternities. This does NOT mean that men should be the only one working and providing, and the women always staying at home. This is just my opinion. Responsibility
should be equal and couples should work together to feel what is right for them.
Each person in a relationship should be dedicated and always doing their best to make things work. In marriage, we should expect to make sacrifices for your spouse, children, or both. If we have a behavior or attitude that is detrimental to the family/relationship, we should be willing to change rather than have pride and believe you are right 100% of the time.
It is important that we "get in sync with our partner's love preferences." Modernly, I liken this to "learn your partner's love language." Everyone has their own love language, and we need to learn how to love them in theirs rather than love them in ours. We could believe we are doing everything we can to make our spouse feel loved, but if it isn't in their language, it will not reach them and what they need to feel wholesome and truly loved.
As a couple, we always need to strive to spiritually fulfill our marriage by going to the temple. It is hard at times to go when you have a family but if we have faith and can go as often as possible, we will be rewarded for our effort. Marriage is a sacred ordinance, and if we nourish that love, it will blossom into that happy relationship that Spencer W. Kimball promised we could have.
